Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed for people who have had a heart attack, cardiac catheterization, stents, or open-heart surgery. It is a planned program that combines health education with appropriate, monitored exercise. Participants learn how to exercise during supervised activity as well as receive information about how a low fat diet, quitting smoking, stress reduction, and changing other cardiac risk factors can improve their health.

SVRHC’s Cardiac Rehab Program can help you:

• Understand risk factors for heart disease and how to reduce them
• Improve the ability to cope with stress
• Lower blood pressure
• Understand medications
• Strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system
• Gain a great sense of well-being and confidence
• Improve physical activity

The Cardiac Rehab Department offers the ability to have trained professionals assist, observe, and educate patients while they begin their program. Most patients spend 6-8 weeks attending sessions three times a week following an initial evaluation. Patients are then encouraged to develop a home maintenance program. Patients need a doctor’s referral following a cardiac event (cardiac catheterization, surgery, etc), and have a stress test and a lipid profile done prior to starting the program.

For more information on our informative, caring Cardiac Rehabilitation program, please call 417-4528.

Foundation

The Sierra Vista Regional Health Center Foundation, founded in 1992, supports the charitable mission of Sierra Vista Regional Health Center and is dedicated to improving the health, wellness, education, and quality of life of our community. Sierra Vista Regional Health Center, serving all of Southern Cochise County, is a not-for-profit community-based health care organization. A volunteer board of directors oversees the administration of the Foundation.

Generous community financial support to the Foundation continues to enhance patient care, as well as community health and education.   Each contribution represents a significant investment in the health and well being of our community.   As our community grows, your generosity will provide the means for additional expertise with prompt, convenient, and improved health care.

The Foundation works to provide the latest in high-technology equipment for our health care community.  In the past tow years, we have purchased two C-Arms, which take images of surgical sites without having to move the patient.  We also purchased a digital mammography system in 2007 which produces ultra-clear images during breast cancer screenings.  These images provide for earlier detection of breast cancer, increased treatment options, and positive outcomes for our patients.

Postpartum Depression

We are pleased to announce a new service provided by SVRHC's Maternal Child Department. In March of 2008, we implemented a screening program for postpartum wellness, specifically to assess for a woman's risk of Postpartum Depression or Mood Disorder.   A team of Maternal Child RNs have been trained for this program, April Anderson, Ellen Ackerman and Andrea White. The program consists of a phone call, by one of our team members, to a woman four weeks after delivery. We use the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to evaluate a new mother's risk for Postpartum Depression or Mood Disorder, a distressing disorder more prolonged that the "baby blues". If a woman scores nine or greater on the EPDS, we refer her to a doctor and other community resources as appropriate.

What is a postpartum mood disorder?   Having a baby is typically viewed as a happy time in a family's life. However, may women experience emotional changes after childbirth that can have a serious effect on the entire family. Emotional changes are the result of many factors, including changes in hormones, the physical stress of labor and delivery, not getting enough sleep, and the demands of caring for a newborn.  About  75-80% of new moms will experience the Baby Blues. It is described as mild depression mixed with happier feelings, or as some women state, "It's an emotional roller coaster". The Blues usually begin 2-3 days after birth and symptoms include:

Postpartum Depression:   If the Baby Blues last more than two weeks or if symptoms of the blues become worse, you are most likely experiencing Postpartum Depression. 10-20% of women will experience Postpartum Depression. Symptoms include those in the Baby blues as well as: Treatment Options:   There are several treatments for postpartum mood disorders. The most common of these are:

Advice for Fathers:

Self Help:   Women who have a mild form of postpartum mood disorder may find some relief by trying some of the following ideas:

When Self Help is not Enough:   If symptoms do not get better or they start to interfere with your daily life, women are encouraged to contact their health care provider. The Arizona Warmline for Postpartum Support International is 888-434-MOMS (6667).  SVRHC's Postpartum message phone is 417-3033.

Volunteers

We utilize Volunteers in most of the departments here at the hospital who average about 1300 hours per month. These areas include the clinical departments such as Maternal/Child, Med/Surg, ICU/Tele, Emergency Department, and Rehabilitation Services.

Our Volunteers work closely with our nursing staff and technicians to lend assistance wherever needed.   They help greet patients and family members, answer phones, stock small supplies, create packets, help with charts, and take items to patient rooms such as flowers or mail.   Because of liability, Volunteers are not allowed to administer any type of patient care.

Our non-clinical departments include, Medical Records, Client Services, Human Resources, Patient Accounts, and Nutrition & Food Services.   Our Volunteers help out by making copies, data entry, putting together packets, answering phones, covering the office for meetings, and making files and doing food preparation.

Potential Volunteers and Auxiliary members need to complete a two-hour mandatory training, drug screen, TB, and background check before being able to work anywhere in the hospital as well as an all day hospital orientation.

We request that all volunteers do a minimum of four hours per month in order to remain active in our program.   There's no feeling like the good feeling you get from helping others. If you would like to become involved in our Volunteer or Auxiliary programs, please contact Sharrina Cook-General at 520-417-3153 or Annette Shelton in Hospice at 520-417-3082.
